The True Blood Conundrum (regarding episode 2x01)

jgh:

But… how could he lie? Sookie reads minds. Couldn’t Sookie just read Jason’s mind and know that he’s lying to her and what his real plans are?

She could but didn’t have any real reason to do so. After all, she does have some level of control, maybe not in stressful situations and such, but most certainly (and most of the time) she does, and she’s not very comfortable in reading the minds of friends and relatives. Not without a good reason, at least.

And the way I see it, she didn’t have one here. Oh, we know she had, but she didn’t. I don’t remember the scene too well (lousy memory is my curse) but wasn’t Jasons explanation somewhat plausible? And even if it were, Sookie wants to believe (and believe in) her brother, and not listening in on his thoughts is way of showing trust and support.

To make it short, because I always go on for far too long, he could lie because she chose not to read his mind.

And to make this even longer, I suppose one could argue why Jason even tried to lie with a mind-reading sister by his side (and he knows she can do it, right?), but then I would point out that Jason isn’t exactly known for making wise decisions, even when he’s fully aware it’s not a wise decision.

I love Jason Stackhouse. Such a great, stupid, warm, good-hearted, lost and confused character.
